What are the Benefits of a Good Memory?

You might think that having a good memory is only useful if you have to remember lots of different information in your job role. While this might be true in some circumstances, having a good memory is a valuable skill that can benefit anyone, no matter your job title. Here's why:

  • Greater capacity to learn new things
  • Increased focus on tasks
  • More knowledgeable in your job role or areas that interest you
  • Higher confidence in yourself and your ability to
  • Reduced anxiety and frustration around remembering important dates or information
  • Improved social interactions

While some can clearly remember a particular class from their school days or a conversation with an old friend from years ago, others struggle to recall what they ate for dinner the night before. But that's okay, our brains have different ways of focusing and remembering things.

Don't worry, this doesn't mean your memory is broken!

5 Top Tips for a Better Memory at Work

1. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

Physical exercise is the key to a healthier brain. Don’t skip heart-friendly exercises, it increases oxygen to your brain and reduces the chance of diseases that can lead to memory loss. Always remember, what is good for your heart, is definitely great for your brain.

Second to our list is meditation, studies by neuroscientists have shown that with meditation practice you can uplift your memory.

Did you know that diet is also a boost-memory factor? For instance, eating berries can help to stave off memory decline or fatty fish (such as salmon, trout and sardines), which are all rich sources of Omega-3s and they play a major role in sharpening your memory. Some other foods which can also nurture your memory are turmeric, broccoli, dark chocolate, nuts and pumpkin seeds.

2. Visualise Ideas and Concepts

Whether you need to get your creative juices flowing, or you need to practice a speech or presentation for an upcoming meeting, the best way to use your brain's memory to your advantage is to pay attention to charts, pictures or graphics. These are not only a great way to jog your memory, but it's also proven that we remember a lot more if we use visualisations over simple text.

Also, aim to bunch ideas or concepts with the same topic into the same section, or use highlighters to help your brain use colour as a memory note.

3. Get a Good Night Sleep

Bad quality of sleep can also lead to memory loss, 95% of adults need between 7.5 to 9 hours of sleep every night for sleep deprivation to be avoided.

A regular sleeping schedule can also help for a better quality of sleep. Going to bed at the same time every night and waking up at the same time each morning, is considered a healthier routine for your brain.

4. Use Brain Training Apps

Nowadays, the brain-training genre apps have become extremely popular. They promise to effectively exercise your brain and improve your focus and memory skills. Here are a few free (in-app purchases) app suggestions for Android / iOS:

  • Lumosity
  • Fit Brains Trainer
  • Peak
  • Elevate
  • Memorado Brain Training

5. Reduce Multi-Tasking

Although multi-tasking is a top skill that most job roles require, doing too multi-tasking could impact your memory. If you're constantly jumping from one task to another, your brain is going to struggle to keep up. Try to focus on one thing at a time, or block time during the day to focus on one specific task.
